Temuco
Temuco is a city and commune, capital of the Cautín Province and of the Araucanía Region in southern Chile. The city is located 670 kilometres (416 miles) south of Santiago at the heart of the modern Araucanía Region and historic Araucanía—the land of the Mapuche who resisted Spanish conquest.
Temuco was founded by Chilean military in Mapuche territory 1881 during the occupation of Araucanía and grew quickly into one of Chile's main cities. Temuco grew as a consequence of the livestock, wheat and forestry boom that its surrounding countryside experienced between 1890 up to the 1940s. Nobel Poets Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda both lived in Temuco for some time.
Temuco's central place in Araucanía with easy access to the Andean valleys and the coast makes it a hub for agricultural, livestock and forestry operations as well as communication and trade centre for the numerous small towns of Araucanía.
Etymology
The name comes from the Mapudungun language, meaning "temu water"; "temu" (Blepharocalyx cruckshankii) is a tree used by Mapuche for medicinal purposes.

Temuco es una ciudad central de Chile, al sur de Santiago. Su gran plaza central, la Plaza Aníbal Pinto, está adornada con palmas importadas. Cerca está el Museo Regional de la Araucanía, un edificio colonial que alberga trajes y objetos decorativos mapuches, junto con artefactos arqueológicos, como urnas fúnebres. Al noreste está el Monumento Natural Cerro Ñielol, una colina forestada con olivos y laureles
Temuco es una ciudad de la zona sur de Chile, capital de la provincia de Cautín y de la Región de La Araucanía. Fue fundada como fuerte en 1881 por Manuel Recabarren Rencoret debido principalmente a su ubicación estratégica en el valle central de la región. La ciudad se encuentra ubicada entre 619 y 675 kilómetros en línea recta y en ruta respectivamente al sur de Santiago de Chile, La comuna de Temuco cuenta, según el censo de 2017, con una población de 304.871 habitantes, la cual forma junto a Padre Las Casas la conurbación llamada Gran Temuco, conformada en total por 410.520 habitantes, siendo el área metropolitana más poblada del sur del país.
En su radio urbano, cuenta con uno de los espacios naturales protegidos más emblemáticos de la región, el Monumento Natural Cerro Ñielol, ubicado a diez cuadras de la Plaza de Armas, donde se pueden apreciar vestigios de los bosques originales del valle central de La Araucanía chilena.
El nombre de la ciudad procede de Temuko, que es un término en mapudungun que significa "agua de Temu". "Temu", es el nombre común mapuche de dos especies arbóreas de la familia de las mirtáceas, nativos de Chile, Luma apiculata (Arrayán) y Blepharocalyx cruckshanksii. Ambas especies se caracterizan por su corteza rojiza anaranjada en su estado adulto y por presentar frutos y hojas aromáticas comúnmente utilizadas en la medicina tradicional mapuche. Mientras para Blepharocalyx cruckshanksii aún no se determina su estado de conservación, Luma apiculata es relativamente común y, en Temuco, se puede observar tanto en el Monumento Natural Cerro Ñielol en su estado natural así como también de forma ornamental en parques, jardines y veredas de la ciudad.
El 23 de febrero llegaban al paso del río Cautín en un terreno al norte del río, entre este y el estero Temuco, residían varios caciques que habían abandonado sus campos e incendiado sus rucas. Allí, en lo que hoy es el Museo Nacional Ferroviario se estableció ese día un campamento y al día siguiente, un poco más al surponiente se fundaba la ciudad.

Temuco (Spanish pronunciation: [teˈmuko]) is a city and commune, capital of the Cautín Province and of the Araucanía Region in southern Chile. The city is located 670 kilometres (416 miles) south of Santiago. The city grew out from a fort of the same name established in 1881 during Chile's invasion of Araucanía.[4] Temuco lies in the middle of the historic Araucanía, a traditional land of the indigenous Mapuche.
Temuco's central place in Araucanía with easy access to the Andean valleys, lakes and coastal areas makes it a hub for tourism, agricultural, livestock and forestry operations as well as a communication and trade centre for the numerous small towns of Araucanía. Temuco has recently been regarded as a university city as it houses two large universities: University of the Frontier and Temuco Catholic University. Nobel laureates Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda both lived in Temuco for some time.

like going around the market to approach the lifestyle and the taste of the inhabitants of Temuco.
This commercial centre located in the urban core welcomes residents and tourists every day. Its construction works started in 1928 and it was finally inaugurated in May 1930. Mercado de Abasto, as it used to be called at first, replaced the ancient poultry market situated opposite Recabarren Square, which had been the shopping point for the dwellers of Temuco so far. In 1987, important structural reforms were made to enlarge and refurbish the facilities. At present, they occupy an area of 5,000 square meters that includes 142 indoor and outdoor stores accessed through 5 entrances.
The Municipal Market is one of the traditional spots that visitors should not miss if they really wish to see all aspects of Temuco.
Visiting a city market makes us feel close to the lifestyle of its community, to the customs and tastes of the locals. Maybe that is the reason why municipal markets are so attractive and singular. And the Temuco market faithfully reflects these characteristics. It is located in the core of the centre and welcomes thousands of residents and tourists every day.

Temuco es una ciudad central de Chile, al sur de Santiago. Su gran plaza central, la Plaza Aníbal Pinto, está adornada con palmas importadas. Cerca está el Museo Regional de la Araucanía, un edificio colonial que alberga trajes y objetos decorativos mapuches, junto con artefactos arqueológicos, como urnas fúnebres. Al noreste está el Monumento Natural Cerro Ñielol, una colina forestada con olivos y laureles
Temuco es una ciudad de la zona sur de Chile, capital de la provincia de Cautín y de la Región de La Araucanía. Fue fundada como fuerte en 1881 por Manuel Recabarren Rencoret debido principalmente a su ubicación estratégica en el valle central de la región. La ciudad se encuentra ubicada entre 619 y 675 kilómetros en línea recta y en ruta respectivamente al sur de Santiago de Chile, La comuna de Temuco cuenta, según el censo de 2017, con una población de 304.871 habitantes, la cual forma junto a Padre Las Casas la conurbación llamada Gran Temuco, conformada en total por 410.520 habitantes, siendo el área metropolitana más poblada del sur del país.
En su radio urbano, cuenta con uno de los espacios naturales protegidos más emblemáticos de la región, el Monumento Natural Cerro Ñielol, ubicado a diez cuadras de la Plaza de Armas, donde se pueden apreciar vestigios de los bosques originales del valle central de La Araucanía chilena.
El nombre de la ciudad procede de Temuko, que es un término en mapudungun que significa "agua de Temu". "Temu", es el nombre común mapuche de dos especies arbóreas de la familia de las mirtáceas, nativos de Chile, Luma apiculata (Arrayán) y Blepharocalyx cruckshanksii. Ambas especies se caracterizan por su corteza rojiza anaranjada en su estado adulto y por presentar frutos y hojas aromáticas comúnmente utilizadas en la medicina tradicional mapuche. Mientras para Blepharocalyx cruckshanksii aún no se determina su estado de conservación, Luma apiculata es relativamente común y, en Temuco, se puede observar tanto en el Monumento Natural Cerro Ñielol en su estado natural así como también de forma ornamental en parques, jardines y veredas de la ciudad.
El 23 de febrero llegaban al paso del río Cautín en un terreno al norte del río, entre este y el estero Temuco, residían varios caciques que habían abandonado sus campos e incendiado sus rucas. Allí, en lo que hoy es el Museo Nacional Ferroviario se estableció ese día un campamento y al día siguiente, un poco más al surponiente se fundaba la ciudad.

Temuco
Temuco is a city and commune, capital of the Cautín Province and of the Araucanía Region in southern Chile. The city is located 670 kilometres (416 miles) south of Santiago at the heart of the modern Araucanía Region and historic Araucanía—the land of the Mapuche who resisted Spanish conquest.
Temuco was founded by Chilean military in Mapuche territory 1881 during the occupation of Araucanía and grew quickly into one of Chile's main cities. Temuco grew as a consequence of the livestock, wheat and forestry boom that its surrounding countryside experienced between 1890 up to the 1940s. Nobel Poets Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda both lived in Temuco for some time.
Temuco's central place in Araucanía with easy access to the Andean valleys and the coast makes it a hub for agricultural, livestock and forestry operations as well as communication and trade centre for the numerous small towns of Araucanía.
Etymology
The name comes from the Mapudungun language, meaning "temu water"; "temu" (Blepharocalyx cruckshankii) is a tree used by Mapuche for medicinal purposes.
